Raw, Energized & Rhythmic: Stomp’s Award Winning
Dance & Percussion Sensation Comes to the Valley
By Dave Cooper
Since 1991, Stomp’s sensational touring ensemble has been tirelessly circumnavigating the globe performing to sold-out venues and entertaining myriad audiences – this week, Stomp will be appearing at Gammage Auditorium on ASU’s Tempe campus with matinee and evening show times on December 28 - 31.
Stomp: To tread or trample heavily or violently. A dance involving a rhythmical, heavy step.
Tie in a dynamic, intricate weave of hard-driving percussion into this live performance and your heart will jazzed with excitement. Presented in its unique, artistic onstage arrangement, Stomp could also be described as skillfully choreographed mayhem.
Stomp’s innovative eight-member troupe bangs and clangs utilizing a vast collection of non-traditional percussion instruments. The tools and devices implemented into a typical Stomp performance may include water bottles, hub caps and match boxes. Or perhaps it’s a manic, rumbling flurry of sounds involving a hypnotic entanglement of oxygen canisters, galvanized pipes, automobile radiators, and oil drums. They may also intrigue their captivated audience by producing unique aural resonance with Zippo lighters, brooms, sand, and even bananas.
Whatever noise-making apparatus is deftly employed by these world-class percussionists, audience members are sure to be mesmerized by unique cadences and the tightly-arranged rhythmic connection between Stomp’s creative players.
